Hiking in Canillas de Aceituno, Málaga
There are few trails more emblematic than this one; not only in Andalusia, but in Spain. And this is not only talk: in this crossing we look at a suspension bridge (among the most well known in Spain), we travel through nature in its purest state in the Natural Park of the Sierra de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama and we finish it in an amazing way: with a cultural walk in a white Mozarabic village with incredible charm: Canillas de Aceituno.
Hiking El Saltillo - The trail suspended in four points
- An unforgettable 8 km journey due to its vast natural beauty, related to you from beginning to end by our guide.
- Climb the hanging bridge of El Saltillo, the third longest in Spain, and enjoy its unmatched panoramic vistas.

Ecopicnic final
Cuando acabemos, cervecita y productos de proximidad para recuperar energías… Con el subidón de haber superado el reto.
It looks good, we know… let’s not wait any longer and get into the details.
This is what this hiking experience in El Saltillo is like
We will leave Nerja at 09:00h and make a small stop at Vélez-Málaga at 09:20h (you can choose where to be picked up) before heading to our starting point: the heart of the Natural Park of the Sierra de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama, on a forest trail whose fauna, flora, geology and history will be explained to you by your guide.
The trail, which is a medium effort, takes us to a viewpoint overlooking the Maroma mountain and the Almanchares cliff. Since the panoramic vistas are really beautiful, it will certainly be time to start taking pictures. But save some energy for what comes next…
We then arrived at El Saltillo bridge, which we’ll cross to our senses’ delight. Imagine: the third longest suspension bridge in Spain, like another natural element crossing nature, 54 meters high. Can you envision it? The best thing to do is to come and check it out.
And then… It’s time to recharge your batteries with a delicious ecopicnic with fresh locally sourced snacks, and even better, we will be delighted simultaneously with incredible views. What scenery!
Upon our departure, we follow an irrigation ditch of Arab origin, the perfect prelude to the last stage of the route: a cultural visit to Canillas de Aceituno, a beautiful Mozarabic white village that surprises locals and strangers alike with the stories of its origins and traditions. A full-fledged cultural immersion. You’ll get to know our history first hand.
At that point we will ask you if you feel like having some tapas of the area for a perfect finale, because then we will go to the meeting point in the morning and we will say our goodbyes.. Later that day, or at the latest the next, we will send you the photos and videos we have taken with our GoPro.

What we need from you for this El Saltillo experience
It's pretty simple, but necessary. Keep an eye on the trail:
You have to bring appropriate footwear and comfortable clothes.
If you want to, bring your own food and drinks for the ecopicnic.
You have to arrive at the meeting point in Nerja (09:00h) or Vélez-Málaga (09:20h) at the indicated time.
Other than that, if you bring a lot of good vibes in order to have a good time and learn, you’ll be ready to start.
Below are some additional details also included in the experience, but they weren't exciting enough to list above

Environmental permit from the Junta de Andalucía
You need a special permit to enter this area of the Natural Park. Not just anyone can enter. Well, we DO have it 😉
Civil liability and accident insurance
You have to have it, by law; not that we doubt your trekking skills. Well, we also include it.

But this is what sets the tone:
This is for you if:
- You want to do a route where nature and local culture are the main protagonists.
- You are in acceptable physical condition.
- You are at least 8 years old
- You are looking for an alternative way to get to know and enjoy the destination you are traveling to.
And it is not if...
- You do not like ecotourism or nature.
- You don't enjoy small groups.
- You don't take care of the places you visit.
And if you like it, what do you have to do?
It’s a very simple process:
You click on the button and complete your reservation
(dates, personal data and the 35€/person payment).
We will confirm it immediately with an email
and send you the information about what you have to bring, the schedule, meeting point, etc.
We meet at the meeting point in Nerja or Vélez-Málaga
and go in the van to the starting point in the Paraje Natural.
We all enjoy the experience
that we have told you above like little kids.
We return you to the above-mentioned meeting points.
We send you a link with the photos and videos we’ve taken.
You’ll want to remember this adventure, trust us.
Note: We also have this route in a linear version - it's a little shorter and less demanding
This is an option that we only accept upon request. It consists of an experience through the same area, only in a linear trail: we leave Canillas de Aceituno, go through the suspension bridge and, when we get to the other side, we rest and return to finish in the Mozarabic village.
The main difference is the physical demand, which is less in this case, and the distance: the circular route is 8 km, while this route is only 4 km.
This easier linear route option has a cost of 35€/person, it is only available on request and you can find it at the link below. We will need to be a minimum of 5 people, of course:

Who is behind all this?
It will be hard for you to see us standing still and completely idle. We love active and sustainable ecotourism, both when we are traveling and when we are working on our experiences. We try to share this way of life with our fellow adventurers, always caring about our planet.

Frequently Asked Questions (yes, there are some)
Not really, but you do need to have a mid/average fitness level. This is a medium level (8 km) route. If you are not physically prepared, there’s also a less demanding option; for more information see the following question.
The easier alternative is a circular route of 4 km, starting and ending at the same point, while the one we have described starts at a point in the Natural Park and ends in Canillas de Aceituno and is 8 km in total. Request the linear route here.
Sports shoes, comfortable clothes and backpack, and only if you want to because it is included, food and drink for when the ecopicnic takes place. We especially recommend you bring something extra to drink – the water we provide is a half liter plastic water bottle. In short: if you can bring your own drink, all the better (and if it’s in a sustainable container, that would be peeeeerfect).
No, you will have to be at the bus station in Nerja at 09:00h or at the meeting point in Vélez-Málaga at 09:20h. If you want us to pick you up in Málaga or elsewhere that will come with an additional cost.
The bus company ALSA has daily tickets with multiple schedules from both cities to the bus station of Nerja (and vice versa).
Yes, but if you suffer from vertigo, please let us know or ask for the linear route, where you can avoid crossing it (in the circular route you must cross it, but don’t worry, the bridge is totally safe).
This route is organized upon request only, both day and schedule.
Yes, 10 people more or less. We like to create a group feeling and get to know our adventurers, and that is impossible when there’s too many people. There is also the option to make the experience completely private; you just have to ask us.
If you let us know 5 days in advance or more, yes: the full amount. And if it is due to a medical reason, if you give us proof of cancellation, we will refund the money even if you don’t let us know 5 days in advance.
Of course. We can make a voucher with it, so you can surprise whoever you want.
Have you made up your mind? Come on, you won’t regret it one bit:
